Renaissance Zones

Nearly 800 properties – over 780 parcels – within six areas of the City are designated Renaissance Zones; a powerful market-based program designed to spur new jobs, investment, and redevelopment in designated urban areas.

Because Michigan Single Business Tax, 6 mill state education tax, Michigan Personal and Real Property Taxes, and City Income Taxes are waived, "Ren-zones" are virtually tax-free for businesses or residences.

Grand Rapids’ Renaissance Zone has become the most successful in Michigan, and we continue to lead the state with the number of Renaissance Zone projects. In 2001, Grand Rapids announced an additional $26,363,000 in new investment, bringing the total investment in the six areas since the program started in January 1997 to $146,000,000.
